History

IFIP Working Group 1.5, originally established in 1995, as “Cellular Automata and Machines”, was dissolved in early 2004, after several discussions that revealed its scope was too narrow. As a consequence, its scope was extended, from cellular automata to more general discrete complex systems. The Working Group 1.5 was then re-established in 2009, since then denominated “Cellular Automata and Discrete Complex Systems”.

But even during the period of its restructuring, the community involved continued organising the series of AUTOMATA workshops, the International Workshops on Cellular Automata and Discrete Complex Systems, held annually in various parts of the world.
